As of July 20, 2012, airmen who have a FAA Special Issuance medical certificate are no longer required to carry the letter which accompanied that issuance. The requirement was deleted by the adoption of the final rule expressed in Docket No. FAA 2012-0056. Those airman who currently carry a medical certificate which lists the carriage of the SI letter as a condition on the certificate are also relieved of this requirement. New medical certificates will not be re-issued, but when replaced on the normal replacement cycle, they will not contain this condition.
